A Semester in London in the Fall Past Review

By (Biochemistry, The University of Texas at Austin) - abroad from 09/22/2014 to 12/12/2014 with

University College London (UCL): London - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely a worthwhile experience. I would encourage everyone to study abroad! I learned how differently professors teach in the UK, and it seemed that they valued interaction with their students more than my home university professors do, which I enjoyed. I got to meet and live with people from different cultures, which was very fun. Traveling to nearby countries was also eye opening and very fun.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

It varies by department, but in my case for the biological sciences department, I registered for classes after I arrived and didn't have any problems with registration.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Be sure to turn in your housing application and confirmation that you plan to attend the university before the housing deadline in the UK time zone. Otherwise your application will be considered late and you will be waitlisted. Other than that, university housing was great and people in the dorms were friendly.

* Food:

Expensive. I cooked at home a lot

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

London is a very globally cultural city and that is represented at UCL as well. I met students from every continent (minus Antarctica), and it was really cool talking to them and learning about their cultures. Definitely get involved with organizations on campus and you'll get to know people better.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

No health problems, so I can't really comment. I brought my daily meds with me from home that lasted me the duration of the program.

* Safety:

Campus and area surrounding UCL are very safe. Never worried about safety since the city is pretty well lit and there are always a bunch of people out and about.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
