Abroad Experience at UCL Past Review

By (Middlebury College) - abroad from 01/09/2017 to 06/09/2017 with

University College London (UCL): London - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes it was definitely worthwhile. I loved being able to experience a new culture. Although the U.K. is similar to the US it is by no means the same. Even being able to experience living in the city was amazing and different.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Classes were educational but I did not like the structure of them-much less discussion they were mostly lecture based

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

UCL's program administration was truly terrible. Registering for classes was a nightmare for two weeks. Even doing something as simple as printing became incredibly complicated.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Living arrangements were really nice. They were new and modern and I had my own single with a bathroom and a shared kitchen.

* Food:

I was not part of UCL's dining plan since I had a kitchen but it was nice being able to eat out, order food, or cook.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I really enjoyed living in London and UCL is in the middle of the city-a great location to experience the culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not have issues with healthcare.

* Safety:

London is an incredibly safe city and UCL is in a safe are. It's fine to walk around at night around UCL. In addition if you ever feel unsafe it's in a busy area so you can easily hail a cab or call an uber, etc.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

While I didn't love all of my classes, they were very educational and overall I enjoyed UCL. It was really nice being in the middle of the city, the other students were nice and smart, and the resources available to us were great.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $75/week
