What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
My time in Belize was amazing and it has opened more possibility and chances than I ever imagined. I am so glad that I took the opportunity. It changed every dimension of my life and myself as an educator. It was un-belize-able!

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

What I learned during my time in Belize was undoubtedly more than I could have ever imagined. Since it is student teaching, everything experienced is first hand and "real". The entire experience is raw. Each day is a new adventure and chance to learn something new. It was rewarding to give and receive, not only from the school but the community I became part of. Even on the toughest days, I walked home from school with the largest smile. My student teaching has changed my entire outlook on education and life. It was the best possible way for me to jump into teaching, while also taking on a different part of life. Be sure to expect anything, everyone's adventure will be different.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The school administration will help you with whatever you may need. You need to learn to vocalize your expectations and the needs that you may have. I did have an issue my first week with them misunderstanding what my role was in the school. They were under the impression that I was a volunteer. (side note I showed up and they were not aware the I was even going to be there, which was the cause of this). I had to clearly explain my goals and expectations, and once I did they respected that and no other issues arose. That's one thing you need to learn here, if you need help or expect something, come out and say it.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I had the best family ever. They were supportive and welcomed me into the family with no problem. It was near school, some parks and also near some of the clubs. There was not a single moment in Belmopan where I did not feel safe. Especially in my home.

* Food:

Rice, beans and chicken! You will be eating lots of that! Being from New Mexico, I don't think anyone coming from NMSU will have problems with the food. There are tons of places to go eat, go out and find them. DQs near UB is a great place to meet people and get some good food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Everyone is so friendly and willing to invite you into their life. There are tons of things to do. Don't be shy. But of course anyone considering IST is probably not too shy of a person. I could list them forever! Try not to say no to anything, it's all so beautiful and amazing.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I did not use a bank. It is so easy to simply exchange USD when buying groceries. That's what I did the whole time.

Language

Language acquisition improvement?

It was a plus to practice Spanish while in Belize. Understanding the Kreol was not too difficult once I was here awhile. The students talk it fast and raw, but it was not a major difficulty once you are around it.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? If it's something you want to do, don't hold back. Not many people can get chances like this. You will make connections and develop life long friends. I know it's something that people will say in this sort of situation, but it's true. It does not cost A LOT more than student teaching in the US, take it! If you enjoy taking on adventure and trying new things you are perfect for it. Feel free to contact me if you want to know more.
