What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes. Although I found that there was a lack of support from the host University sometimes in the end the whole experience was worth while.

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 6 months+

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was frustrating at the end since I had to take all of my final exams and complete the requirements for the class before leaving since I studied abroad in the fall. But usually the classes do not require tons of work in contrast to the US where usually classes require lots of reading and assignments to hand in each class. Class many times were not based off of any books, but the teachers recommended a list of books that may help with the class. The professors do not require essays that are concise and short, usually they are really long papers (sometimes over 10 pages). Some of the professors really do not like Erasmus students (european students) since there are so many and so many times they are not really friendly with foreign students in general.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I was really disappointed with the program here. Upon arriving I had to figure everything out for myself. The only thing that the university did for us was hold a presentation for the Erasmus students with a slideshow and powerpoint but not with any specific helpful information as in how was our advisor or how to choose our classes. Our ¨advisor¨ was really unfriendly and rude. The coordinator in the International Relations office (Inmaculada Otero) was extremely unhelpful when I came to her with my problem about having to drop a class and was actually quite rude as well. It was not my fault, but rather the unwillingness of the professor to adapt to the way that the program was set up. I liked the program size and that we were placed in classes in Spanish along with Spaniards. My main grievance is the lack of support by the host University. They could have been a lot more helpful and less rude.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Finding housing in Cádiz is quite simple and there are lots of options. I think that only living with a host family for 2 weeks was good for me, but some people really enjoy it. The apartment were I live I found on easypiso.com and there are many other websites like it. I live with a Spaniard and I think it was the best decision I made overall. Personally, I would reccommend living with local students. The neighborhoods are all very safe and the city is extremely easy to get around. If you live in the old part of the city (where the university is and lots of the nightlife) you can walk anywhere. But the new part of the city manytimes has views of the ocean, but is further, many times students use bikes or the bus to get to class and a taxi to get home at night. Rent in an apartment is usually between 200 and 300 euros per month.

* Food:

They cook with lots of oil. LOTS. But the quality of the food is great. especially in the Public Market where there is fresh seafood.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The university did not organize any trips and social events occurred, but I was never told or invited to them so I´m not really sure how they are.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

A lot of health related things are very inexpensive and it is really easy to get into a doctor is you have problems. I never had any problems, but a few friends had stomach problems but that was it. I did not have to get vaccines, but I think the visa required something... TB? The city is very very very safe. I had no problems walking home alone at night after being out and theft is not really common.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

I practice Spanish with my Spanish roommate and almost all of the foreign exchange students here speak Spanish with eachother. Also with a few Spaniards that I met here I spoke in Spanish with them. Yes, you have to use Spanish in everday interaction because VERY few people speak English or other languages here. It´s pretty difficult to get around without Spanish. Most people do not speak English.

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Etnología de América

Course Department: Filosofía y Letras: Historia: 510034
Instructor: Alberto José Gullón Abao
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: I enjoyed the course and the professor. He was extremely nice and attentive to my needs about having to leave before the semester ended and gave me an oral final exam. The class is interesting, and even though there are not many visuals his lectures seem to be well organized and he involves the students a lot with questions.
Credit Transfer Issues: I do not think that I will have problems.
Course Name/Rating:

Literatura Hispanoamericana I

Course Department: Filosofía y letras: Filolfía Hispanica: 51018
Instructor: Jesús M. Zulueta
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: The class does not require any work other than the final exam, attendance, and participation. The instructor however loves to pick on foreginers and makes jokes with them (always in good humor though) and asks them lots of questions. If you are not comfortable with speaking aloud in class or being called on CONSTANTLY just because you´re not Spanish I would not recommend the class. It helps a lot to have a little bit of a background in poetry in Spanish.
Credit Transfer Issues: I do not think that I will have problems transfering the credit.

Arte Español Moderno

Course Department: Filosofía y letras: Humanidades: 511046
Instructor: Antonio Aguayo Cobo
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: This course was difficult because he used powerpoints to show images of the art that he was speaking about, but without any notes, and many times not even the name of the building or the work of art. So in order to be able to go back to study later for the course you had to take lots and very detailed notes. The grading system was based on attendence, an essay, the final exam, and three short essays where you had to describe and analyze a work of art. So, even though the class was challenging, over all I think the balance of the grades works out.
Credit Transfer Issues: I do not know if I will have trouble transfering credit or not.

Historia Antigua de España

Course Department: Filosofía y letras: Historia: 510002
Instructor: Mercedes Serrato Garrio
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: I stuggled a lot in this class. Although I understand everything else that my other professors say, she speaks in a much more formal way when lecturing so it was difficult to follow her. She never used any visuals, she only lectured for 2 hours straight. She is pretty unfriendly as well. The first time I went to her office to ask her a question about an assignment with two other students she called us ¨pesadas¨ (which is pretty offensive). I basically had to learn the whole course on my own to study for the exam because it was really difficult to even follow her train of thought.
Credit Transfer Issues: I do not think that I will have problems transfering the credit.

Antropologia Linguistica

Course Department: 509019
Instructor: Anabel Rodríguez-Piñero Alcalá
Instruction Language: Spanish
Comments: I enjoyed the course while I was in it. It´s a bit more challenging than other courses. The professor requires attendance, and then a project based on research that contains a 20 minutes presentation and 12 page paper plus the final exam. She used powerpoints which were helpful and she gave great examples.
Credit Transfer Issues: I had lots of problems with this course because at the beginning the professor told me that I could take my exam early since my semester in Geneseo begins in January. She was not happy about it, but she said we would work something out. Then, less than a month before I left she changed her mind after a schedule change that made the day of my presentation fall on a date AFTER I would be gone already. So, I attempted to talk with her and she refused to give me full credit for the work because I was leaving too early. She also was not very accommodating about the posibility of sending the exam to a profesor in my university to take it in January. Now I do not know if I will be able to drop the class, or if I will just get a failing grade. I would not recommend this professor if you go in the fall semester and will not be able to stay for the entire semester. She´s not very accommodating.
