About
The explosion in economics, arts, science, poetry, and politics that occurred in Florence in what we have come to call the Italian Renaissance was unprecedented in the history of Europe. This program will focus on major Renaissance and Florentine figures who emerged from the economic growth and political turmoil that accompanied this cultural transformation. We will examine the life and works of Castiglione, a writer who wrote a book on court life and its mores; Machiavelli, a political theorist; Michelangelo, artist and poet; and Ariosto, master of the Italian epic romance. Their works exemplify the tension between Renaissance ideals and the reality of the times, and will help us discuss, understand, connect, and contrast the Italian Renaissance with modern and contemporary Italy. We will make full use of Florence's fabled churches and museums and will also explore some other Renaissance cities around Florence.
