Amazingly difficult and wonderful Past Review

By (HISTORY., University of California - Riverside) - abroad from 08/22/2012 to 12/14/2012 with

University of California EAP (UCEAP): Rome - UC Center Rome

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
There are many thing i learned while abroad, i found a piece of myself in the experience, overall it was worthwhile but if i had to do it again i would definitely chose a different program. I did not like my program but loved the country, which is the only reason i rated it a 7, if not i would of rated it a lot less.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Teachers are bias and grading was illogical, nothing like i have ever experienced in my entire college career

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Extremely bias administration, somewhat offense

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Italy has limited resources but for the price paid, extremely disappointed in what we got, the private apartments were a lot better off than the residence and for a cheaper price

* Food:

Great great food! but that can get expensive.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

italian culture is hard to adjust too, its a rude culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

If you dont have the money upfront you cant get medical treatment, did not like the insurance at all. Had to wait until i returned home to see doctors.

* Safety:

Safety was a plus for this program. The residence had security guards at night and morning so i felt safe in my residence.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

as much as one could try to save money, the little expenses add up quickly. Monthly transportation passes and groceries add up.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? more than a hundred on just bare necessities
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Pack lunch for school, eat at home as often as possible and if you can walk everywhere to cut down on transportation cost

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? none
