By Graham S (Economics., Harvard University) for
University of Cambridge, Pembroke College: Cambridge - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
Yes, it was a different academic environment with different teaching styles and different students. It was also a lot of fun.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 1 month - 6 months |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
again, more focus on writing; exams solely essays even for economics; more leftist and theoretical view of economics as opposed to somewhat conservative and fairly empirical |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
very nice; very used to Americans; treated us as children sometimes |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
|
* Food: |
The food was pretty mediocre. Also, when they advertise 10 meals a week, they are not unlimited meals, but instead money on a card to pay for 10 smallish meals a week. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
very fun; trips 9specifically to Edinburgh) organized by program, as well as parties and such |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
I got the flu which wasn't fun, but was dealt with well. Cambridge is a very safe city. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | almost $200 |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | The exchange rate was terrible. When I spent time in London, I spent tons of money on food, transportation, and beer. |
Language
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? | None |
Direct Enrollment/Exchange
* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? | Direct Enrollment |

A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | I would highly recommend doing a supervision. That was, by far, the most rewarding part of the program. Also, get into punting on the Cam River. |
