Life-changing cultural experience Past Review
By A student (Interdisciplinary Studies, University of Alabama - Tuscaloosa) - abroad from 01/20/2014 to 05/24/2014 with
University of Cape Coast: Cape Coast - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
I learned a lot about myself as a person and world-traveller. I gained a lot of perspective about the world. It has been one of the top 4 worthwhile things I have ever done.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 2 weeks - 1 month |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The classes were presenting very interesting topics (such as Ghanaian culture), but the organization, teaching style, and grading system was very difficult to understand. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The CIE (Centre for International Education) was helpful in most circumstances, but were not always the best at communication. If contacted by phone, they were most helpful. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
|
* Food: |
I LOVE GHANAIAN FOOD. I wish I could make all of it back at home! |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
|
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
My best friend got sick a lot while we were abroad. She was never really given a solid diagnosis because they did not have all the tools needed to diagnose her. Make sure to take your malaria medications while in Ghana, and get your typhoid vaccine! I had friends that came down with both! |
* Safety: |
You can walk around at night, just don't be stupid about it. Take a group of people (preferably males), and stay away from dark, secluded places. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | Around $80 in an average week. |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Don't buy in bulk. They don't give discounts for it unless it's for fresh produce, which goes bad quickly, so you waste that money anyway. |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | No |

A Look Back
* What did you like most about the program? |
|
* What could be improved? |
|
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | I am strong and independent. I can travel the world without a guide book attached to my hand, and I can make friends with people all over the world. |
Reasons For Studying Abroad
To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you. |
The Avid AdventurerThe wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal. |
