The UEA Experience Past Review

By (HISTORY., Trinity University) - abroad from 09/18/2013 to 12/13/2013 with

University of East Anglia: Norwich - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was worthwhile because I needed to see what would happen if I went abroad. I learned that I don't like to live alone and that I loved America even more than I thought I did. Some go abroad and don't want to leave, but I found an appreciation for where I was from.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

For the first half of the semester I had no work but the later half I had lots of papers. The papers were not difficult just time consuming, which was frustrating as I was abroad. The library was fabulous though!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I was directly enrolled into the University.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The housing itself was good but I was not happy living with college freshman again. It may have also been the people I lived with so someone else may enjoy it more.

* Food:

It was all self catered. The food was as to be expected in England: expensive and bland. On the bright side the ethnic food, especially Indian style, was awesome.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I was certainly integrated into life as a normal college first year in England as I was living directly in the dorms.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I had the opportunity to sign up for the national health care program but I did not feel as though I would be there long enough to require it. I had a friend require medical attention at the club on campus and they had EMTs already there just in case.

* Safety:

Norwich was wonderfully safe and accessible, and the campus was always patrolled.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

The Pound is the worst. And I worked very hard to live on the least amount I could.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $200-300
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don't study in the UK if you are worried about money-saving.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The campus
  • Norwich
  • The Equestrian Club
* What could be improved?
  • Nothing really, because it was a good program I just found it was not to my personal liking.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I would have known to actually enroll in a program instead of just the university so that I traveled more. I would have liked to realize that this would require more studying than time for travel and fun.
