A New Kind of Independence Past Review

By (Middlebury College) - abroad from 09/20/2016 to 06/17/2017 with

University of East Anglia: Norwich - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was very much worthwhile. I think being in a new environment can help test certain aspects about yourself. I learned that I can rely on myself for most things (something I don't necessarily do at home).

The structure of my life abroad was very different. I experienced new forms of independence and self-motivation. I had much more free-time and much less class time than I was used too having in a week. It was up to me to attend classes, study, and participate as none of these aspects factor into your grade. The academic environment brought a change of pace and at times it felt as though the information could be absorbed better without the stress of grades. All my professors were very kind and offered a great deal of help to their students. At times, the classes felt a bit unorganized.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $75-$100
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Grocery shopping on a week to week basis saves a lot of money (as opposed to every few days or eating out).

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.

Comments: The professor was very engaged with the topics at hand. The course was operating for the first time, so there were some kinks to work out. However, she was very open to suggestion and the interests of the students. I participated in class more often than I would at my home institution on average. There was one final paper that determined your grade in the class, however the topic of choice is decided by the student.
