A Great Experience @ UEA April 21, 2024
By Jack K (Economics, Middlebury College) - abroad from 09/11/2023 to 12/16/2023 with
University of East Anglia: Norwich - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
It was worthwhile to live in a different place and have the chance to visit Europe for the first time.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 0-2 weeks |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
UEA was not at the same academic caliber as Middlebury. It was common for students to skip class and put minimal effort into assignments. Also, the structure of coursework was a big shock, and taking some exams during J-Term (worth 70%-80% of my total grade) was less than desirable. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
UEA Study Abroad office was a great resource. The staff was both personable and helpful in the abroad process (before/during/after), especially Georgia and Annie. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
The housing was great and convenient. There were slightly better options for on-campus living, but I was completely satisfied with my living arrangement. |
* Food: |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
UEA sports teams were surprisingly welcoming to international students. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
I got sick once while abroad. The school medical office was able to see me quickly and get medicine sent to a local pharmacy at an affordable price. |
* Safety: |
I always felt safe in Norwich and never thought twice about walking around campus or the city at night. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | No |
Direct Enrollment/Exchange
* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? | Exchange |

Reasons For Studying Abroad
To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you. |
The Nearly Native or Trail BlazerCraving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.' |
