University of East Anglia: Norwich - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Got to know myself better, got to travel Europe on the month-long Easter break, got to be independent. Hasn't changed my future plans, except that now I feel much more ready to graduate and live new places, try new things etc.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload seemed like less in terms of number of graded assignments, but they wanted more work done separately and reading done on a less set schedule. Professors weren't as interested in helping individual students, it was more of a teach-yourself mentality. That said, I learned a lot just in a different way. it was very unfortunate I thought that Clark chose to incorporate study abroad grades into at-home GPA, because despite the scaling of UK grades into US grades, students were graded in a different way and for a different reason at UEA than at Clark.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

There was an orientation and everyone who worked iwth students was friendly and helpful. I never needed extra assistance after the first few days but I'm sure it was available I just never sought it out.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Live in Suffolk Terrace - it's the most social and the most fun and the most legitimate experience of a British student at the university. I didn't need to buy much, my flatmates were very accommodating and helpful and kind. The university sold us sheets and my flatmates let me use their cookware.

* Food:

They buy groceries offline. Ask your flatmates.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Getting to know the British students was one of the best parts as they knew where to go, what to do, and made great friends.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Norwich is one of the safest cities and UEA is one of the safest campuses I have ever lived in. There were no prevalent health issues.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Exchange

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Be ready to feel like a transfer student if you go in Spring semester, because you will be the only new one in a flat of many people who have already been there for at least a semester, and who are most likely all from various places in England and plan on attending the university there, not studying abroad. As long as you're okay with this and ready to either ingratiate yourself into their friend group or find your own friends, you're golden. I actually liked this better, although it was uncomfortable at first by the end I found I had made some of the best friends of my life with people of a different country as opposed to other american students studying abroad.
