University of Edinburgh: Edinburgh - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a new international perspective to my major and got to share mine with other people. I gained lots of life long friends and a permanent international network. It was awesome. I would definitely do it again and I am even looking into grad school at the same institution.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

It encouraged a lot of independent study which I liked.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Living in halls enabled me to meet a lot of students that weren't from America. It was especially helpful to have a roommate who was a full time student.

* Food:

The food in the dining halls was okay. I only ate there because I had to.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt very integrated in the culture. I made a lot of friends from there that took me to their favorite restaurants. The people were very welcoming. I also when to the festivals and farmers markets and became a regular at a local coffee shop.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn't have health issues so I didn't have need for the healthcare system

* Safety:

There weren't many crime alerts against students there. It's quiet at night but I wouldn't recommend walking home by yourself at night from society meetings or parties.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

The cost of living was pretty high in Edinburgh but having a meal plan helped out a lot.

* Was housing included in your program cost? No
* Was food included in your program cost? No
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Going out with every night with friends seems like a good idea but it is really draining to your wallet. Also be careful not to shop to much. The charity shops have great stuff as well for very low prices.
