A wonderful semester in Scotland! Past Review
By A student (Wellesley College) - abroad from 09/08/2018 to 12/22/2018 with
University of Edinburgh: Edinburgh - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
I learned how to live independently for a long period of time. I also got out of my comfort zone! It was definitely worthwhile and I look forward to going back!
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 2 weeks - 1 month |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Some classes I took were more rigorous than others. Although my professors were accessible via office hours, there were fewer resources at Edinburgh compared to Wellesley (i.e. no supplemental instruction or tutors). |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The visiting student office responded quickly when I had questions about changing courses. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I absolutely loved my housing. I lived in New Arthur Place, which is in close proximity (<10 minute walk) to the main campus, grocery stores, and restaurants/pubs. The dorm and its neighborhood are quiet compared to other dorms, which I really appreciated. |
* Food: |
I mostly cooked for myself, but there are plenty of places around if you want to eat out. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
By joining the University's folk music society, I got to meet more local students and learn more about Scottish culture. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
|
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
I enjoyed the freedom direct enrollment gave me to pursue my own activities and interests. |
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | $100 |
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | Cook for yourself and buy plane tickets in advance if interested in travelling. Also I regret not getting a 16-25 Railcard, which gets you 1/3 off all UK train travel! |
Language
* Did your program have a foreign language component? | No |
Direct Enrollment/Exchange
* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? | Direct Enrollment |
