The University of Edinburgh is a great place to go abroad! August 16, 2024
By Amelie R (Economics and political science, Wellesley College) - abroad from 01/15/2024 to 05/24/2024 with
University of Edinburgh: Edinburgh - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
Going abroad was my first real opportunity for independence in the realest sense because of how far from home I was. It helped me learn how to take care of myself, how to put myself out there, and how to navigate different countries and cultures.
Personal Information
| How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 1 month - 6 months |
Review Your Program
|
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The classes were fun, engaging, and challenging. The exams definetly took time to get use to though. |
|
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
There were many opportunities for study abroad students to get to know local students and each other. |
|
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
It was nice that we had gaurenteed housing in the dorms, however they were not the nicest places to live as there were many issues with mold, plumbing, etc. |
| * Food: |
Food was really good and fairly priced. Groceries were als omuch cheaper in comparison to the USA. |
|
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
|
|
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
| * Safety: |
I felt very safe walking home alone at night. Overall I think Edinburgh is a very safe city. |
| If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
I really loved the city overall and the people as well. Edinburgh is such a beautiful city and there's a lot you can do there. Everyone was super nice, even strangers on the street! |
Finances
|
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
I don't think it was teribbly expensive to live in the city. I spent about 50-70 a month on groceries, and the cost of the dorm wasn't too high. |
| Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? | About 50-100 a week, depending on if I was cooking or eating out more. |
| Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | If you want to save money, it's much cheaper to cook for yourself than to eat out. I'd recommend saving money for travelling or fun activities. |

A Look Back
| * What did you like most about the program? |
|
| * What could be improved? |
|
| * What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | I wish I knew how quickly the time would fly by. While I made the most of my time abroad, I felt as though I didn't savor it enough until it was getting toward the end. I also wish I knew that classes don't matter as much while abroad becuase you're there to learn in different ways, not just academically. |
