What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned so much about traveling internationally and experiencing other countries.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

The most safe I've ever felt walking around in a city, alone at night. There were many dark alleys and staircases and never once did I feel unsafe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Edinburgh had the international, historic city feel I wanted, was not overly academic so I had time to travel, and was an incredibly accessible and safe city. Exam schedules meant I had most of April and May off for exploring.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

The USD to GBP exchange rate can be a little rough.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Exchange

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Lax academic schedule
  • Gorgeous city
  • Lots of fun things to do and people to see
* What could be improved?
  • N/A
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Only gripe is that the catered dorms tend to house the spoiled, posh, English, boarding school kids. They are very unapproachable. You'd be better off in a un-catered dorm, but it wasn't a big problem.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Slavery in the Early Middle Ages

Course Department: History
Instructor: Zubin Mistry
Instruction Language: English
Comments: As a student of U.S. history who has extensively studied Atlantic slavery, this course was endlessly fascinating as to how we view slavery as an institution more broadly. It was mostly historiography, which could be a drag, but Mistry was an incredible professor. He was extremely knowledgeable, yet approachable and was always good for a laugh. I couldn't recommend this course enough.
