Living in a Castel: Harlaxton Manor Past Review

By (math education, Texas Lutheran University) - abroad from 08/22/2013 to 12/20/2013 with

University of Evansville: Grantham - Study abroad at Harlaxton College

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned all about the history of the UK as well as how they feel about Americans. Nothing can beat the traveling though.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The classes a not hard at all, which is good and the teachers will work with you to get the best grade in the class. Since the professors come from all over and want to travel during the time they have at the manor they do not try to make classes hard or assign a lot of homework.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

All of the people who worked there were extremely helpful as well as nice.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

You stay in the servants courters, and the professors stay in the nicer rooms.

* Food:

The food was decent, however lunch was a lot a like from week to week so it was easy to get tired of what was being served.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

You must try to interact with the locals other wise you will not be able to see how the culture is. I would suggest participating in the meet-a-family program because then you are able to interact and spend time with people who will introduce you to their culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

There is a nurse that is on staff most of the times and it is easy to make appointments to see the doctor when needed.

* Safety:

It's a college that has a bistro in the basement so the only times that safety was a concern was if someone had too much to drink.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

You must consider that you are in a country that is a bit more expensive than back at home otherwise you will spend money without realizing it.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $25 (not including weekend trips)
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Plan your trips a few weeks in advance otherwise you will end up paying more for last minute tickets.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
