University of Evansville: Grantham - Study abroad at Harlaxton College

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a ton about British history, gained experience planning trips, made new friends, travelled to lots of cool places, realized I really enjoy architecture, gained confidence, became more social, and pushed the limits of my comfort zone. Definitely worthwhile!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

All students were required to take a 6 credit hour course in British Studies, which was an informative crash course covering British history and culture. I think the class had a helpful format that was designed to teach American students who had little knowledge of British history.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

All the staff members were great and always willing to help out the students with any problems. They try to make you feel at home and they are extremely organized when it comes to travels.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived on the top floor of a gorgeous 19th century manor, so I'd say I was extremely satisfied. Beautiful building and grounds that were fun to explore. Facilities were clean and working. Lots of common areas to hang out with other students.

* Food:

Harlaxton actually did a much better job of meeting my needs than my university does. I am vegetarian and they had a main course option for me at almost every meal, so I didn't have to just eat the sides or a salad. The also catered to the needs of lactose intolerant and gluten-free students.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Though you are surrounded by only American students, it is very easy to experience local culture. The British Studies professors and manor staff are British, so you can just talk to them all the time. The town of Grantham is very close, so you can always explore there. All the weekend trips involve going to cool cities in England as well as a few other countries. There were also local culture trips (usually free) on Wednesdays that took you to different festivals and sports games and famous manors. They do a good job of giving you opportunities to explore and experience British culture.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

There was a nurse, but apparently she was hard to contact. I was sick twice, but both times I just got medicine at the local grocery store. Some people were more sick than others and complained about their issues not being addressed, but this was not a problem for me.

* Safety:

Extremely safe. I never felt endangered and I never heard about any problems. People who went on weekend trips to other countries occasionally experienced slightly unsafe situations, but that comes with travelling. The manor itself is very safe.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

The tuition was actually less than my home university. I did a lot of weekend travelling, so that was pretty expensive, but it was all optional. I know some people rarely travelled on the weekends and they still had an amazing time staying at the manor and going into Grantham.

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? If you are good at planning, don't go on the school trips and you can save more money. You can still get information from the school-led trips in order to help you navigate the places you travel to.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Norse Myth, Saga, and Legend

Course Department: English
Instructor: Dr. Larry Caldwell
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The class challenged my thinking, but it was not necessarily difficult. The class was discussion- based with essay exams,so it was built for learning and thinking, not just doing assignments. It helped that Dr. Caldwell is extremely passionate about Norse mythology and therefore made the discussions quite interesting. He also made connections to York and Dublin, cities with Viking roots.
Credit Transfer Issues: No transfer issues. At my university, it was counted as a 300 level English course.
