University of Evansville: Grantham - Study abroad at Harlaxton College

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned how to plan and organized. How to ask for directions if I was lost. Communication skills increased greatly. I can now analyze British paintings and literature within their historical context. I learned how to plan with other people and work as a group. Totally 100% worth it.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Intensive and thorough with enough time to go and explore Europe.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Everything went really smooth. They've done this many times.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The half a star gone is because I had a really stupid top bunk bed. The only side of the bed touching the wall was the headboard and there were no rails. I thought I was going to fall out.

* Food:

Overall, I don't think it was bad at all. Odd at times, but not bad.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I was in the Meet-A-Family Program so I got to experience eating with them and going to church. We also took small trips to places.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

There was the Harlaxton Plague going around. Okay, not really but for a while everyone was getting sick. Mainly just coughing and nasal congestion. The nurse gave us some meds, but we really just had to wait it out.

* Safety:

We had a lot of talks about safety and they even have a thing where you're supposed to answer short questions on what you're doing that weekend so you know where you're going to be.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

3.5 Not too bad, but it could get pricey.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? £30
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Save about £50 for medical emergencies. Book airplane flights really early.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The amazing living area.
  • The amount of travel open to us.
  • Meeting really amazing friends and getting to spend a lot of time with them.
* What could be improved?
  • Maybe more preventative measures for health. I was sick for most of my time there. Of course I do have allergies and asthma.
  • More art classes (hint, hint, if you ever need an art teacher Harlaxton)
  • Nothing else. It was wonderful.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Bring clothes you don't mind tossing at the end of the semester. Save room in you suitcase for lots of souvenirs.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
