University of Evansville: Grantham - Study abroad at Harlaxton College

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned that there are some experiences you can only find when in another country.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Both the professors that worked at Harlaxton, as well as the professors that traveled to Harlaxton to teach, were excellent. Although I only took three classes, each professor were clearly experts in their field of academia. My favorite was my Public Relations class, I imagine I'll remember much of what Dr. Watson taught me in that class.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The only problem I had was that they withheld some information, like flight info, lodging, and occasional updates, until only a month in advance which made it difficult to feel comfortable that everything was nice and done. Other than that, everything was pretty smooth.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Was in the carriage house, which was only a bit of a downside since I wasn't living IN the manor, but it still had its perks. It was nice and quiet in there.

* Food:

Don't expect anything special. The best thing they had was pizza and garlic bread. There were some other good options, but most of the time I considered ordering pizza or eating cereal.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Grantham was great, Nottingham was only half an hour away. The local cultural trips were entertaining and educational.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Fortunately, I was fine except for allergies hitting me big time, but the nurse was only ever at her office for a couple hours a day, and she didn't really do much about anything from what I was told.

* Safety:

The staff at Harlaxton are sticklers for safety, not just for the students but also the manor. They work hard to make sure no harm comes to anything or anyone.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Yes, yes, yes. The school is fantastic, the events that they put together are incredibly fun, and the student body is big enough that you meet a lot of people but small enough that you become friends with at least 85% of them.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Definitely save a lot of money, as much as you can. Make sure not to spend too much money on souvenirs. Plan ahead of time what other countries you plan on going to and how much it'll cost. (I'd suggest at least $4,000 and that's if you're a relatively frugal shopper).

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 50 - 100 during school weeks, 250 - 500 while traveling to other countries.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Budget as much as you can, and prepare yourself for that to work only a little bit. Again, plan all your trips far ahead of time and allocate a nice amount of cash for you to use on food, entrance fees, and shopping.

You went abroad with specific academic goals in mind; the program credentials and rigor of your coursework abroad were very important to you. You had a great time abroad, but never lost sight of your studies and (if applicable) were diligent with your foreign language study. Good for you!

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Principles of Public Relations

Course Department: Communications
Instructor: Joe Watson
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Both challenging and enjoyable. Even though it was my first class of the day,I always found what we were talking about pretty interesting because the professor always taught it clearly and lively.
Credit Transfer Issues: Transcripts have not arrived yet, so I'm not sure if there will be any problems...

British Studies

Course Department: British Studies
Instructor: Bujak
Instruction Language: English
Comments: The class was a bit hard. There was the lecture, which was taught by four rotating professors, and then there was seminar which the students were divided up among the 4 professors. The lectures were enjoyable, but a bit hard to stay focused on. The seminars, depending on your professor, were enjoyable. Each of the professors knows their stuff and works hard to teach the history of the British Isles.
