University of Evansville: Grantham - Study abroad at Harlaxton College

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
My eyes were opened to the real world of other countries and cultures. I do believe it was worthwhile.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? None

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I was able to learn very valuable information for my future career about business practices and technology in both the U.K and E.U. I had so much fun traveling for the first time in my life!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Kathy and Charlotte were honestly best two administrate personal there. The other admin personal only cared about the weddings and other events happening that didn't pertain to students. Kathy and Charlotte were the only two who actually cared about the students and bend over backwards to make sure the students had a good time while studying abroad. All my love goes out to them!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Girls stayed on the 5th floor and there were constant problems with the plumbing and elevator. A lot of us were also not okay with the rule of no one allowed on the state rooms floor and gardens when there is a wedding or event taking place. We didn't like this because most of us used the gardens to study and when there was a wedding happening we couldn't sleep due to the music and commotion.

* Food:

We were told that there would be a 5 star chef that was in charge. It wasn't until we were there and having the food that we found out that the head chef just worked at a 5 star restaurant. Also the only food accommodations they provided was vegetarian. There were students there with gluten, dairy, vegan, and other dietary restrictions who were not supported.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We were very integrated the local town people knew we were Harlaxton students before we introduced ourselves. We also really appreciated the staff that British and some Polish.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

Healthcare was basically non-existent. The so called nurse was basically never there and when she was she had no idea what she was doing. All of us just went to the Nursing Instructor that was teaching there because she actually helped us and cared about our health.

* Safety:

Security at Harlaxton makes sure they do their job by keeping their students safe in many ways.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I was able to see all the countries I wanted to with easy access.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $75
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Know that refunds on plane tickets will never happen and returns at store do not happen either. If you are going to try something that you don't know if you would like, I suggest you share the food/price with others so multiple people can try it.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Travel easy
  • Place to call home
  • Experience different cultures
* What could be improved?
  • Food
  • Administrative staff
  • Honesty to students
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? All the things we were lied to about this program would have been nice to know in advance. I also would like to have known that they prioritize their weddings over their students.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Principles of Marketing

Course Department: Marketing
Instructor:
Instruction Language: English
Comments: This class was overly challenging for no reason. The grading did not make sense and the professor was very condescending and refused to help his students when they came to him for help.
Credit Transfer Issues: I am an A/B student and I made a low D in this class. There was another student there that was summa cum laude and this class made them loose that status. The professor only care about himself and his stupid band. You will barely learn anything about marketing.
