University of Evansville: Grantham - Study abroad at Harlaxton College

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned to be more self sufficient. I had to learn to be away from my family for an extended period of time which was difficult at times.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The workload was low because they recommend that since you travel so much you take 12 credit hours instead of a full 16 or more. The teachers come from all different schools which can sometimes be good and sometimes be bad. The British Studies professors are absolutely amazing. They are very helpful whenever you need help with homework or papers and since your teachers live at the school it is always easy to find them. Everyone eats meals together and does activities together. It is an experience unlike that of being at a regular university in America. It is also a great experience because there are usually only between 140-180 students there per semester so the class sizes are really small and everybody knows everybody. You really bond and become close with your classmates as well as your teachers since the class sizes are so small.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

All of the staff at the school are very knowlegeable and will help you with trips that you are planning, be around to help you with classwork if you are struggling with it, or just be there to talk to you if you are having a rough time and missing home. I would say that a major weakness of this program is the environment that it places you in. There are plenty of awesome people that go to Harlaxton, but there are also people that drink a lot and party.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We went to London, visited a work house, and a romantic looking mansion/castle. We also visited cathedrals and castles.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

It is a manor in the middle of the English countryside.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Look into planning some of your own trips, don't just do all of your traveling through the school programs. Planning things yourself will be more time consuming but more cost effective.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

British Studies

Course Department:
Instructor: Phil Taylor
Instruction Language: English
Comments: It was very well structured and really taught a lot about the histories of the United Kingdom of Britain and Northern Ireland. We did a term paper for the end of the course and had to take three exams. It was not an extremely hard course, but it wasvery informative and I learned a lot of things about England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales that I never knew before. Another perk of this class is that you actually get to travel into London and other places to see the things that you are learning about in the class.
