Absolutely worth it, a must do! July 31, 2025

University of Evansville: Grantham - Study abroad at Harlaxton College

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I could write a novel to answer this question, but in a few short sentences, yes, it was very much worth it! I would recommend this program to any of my friends and family! I have grown so much from this experience personally, professionally, and academically. It has opened my eyes to new perspectives, and I am forever grateful for all of the memories and friendships I have made while abroad. Now that I know I can survive all of the subways, missed trains, delayed planes, and any other unexpected setbakcs, I know I can handle anything!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My class was amazing! It seemed like most professors understood that most of your learning abroad comes from visiting new places and learning how to live in a new country, which was awesome!

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The staff were all so amazing! No one was a stranger around the manor, and I have gained so many new connections!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The dorms were amazing! They were all roomy and had everything we needed! The showers were always nice and clean, as were the bathrooms. They took our trash whenever we needed them to as well!

* Food:

The food they made for us was surprisingly pretty good! I never really had an issue with finding something I liked with each meal, which was amazing with how much of a picky-eater I am! The only thing I would note is that if you don't like the food, there is not really any other option for food at the manor, besides the Bistro that closes at 8 pm, and is open variably depending on the day. So, you most likely would have to Uber into town to grab something to eat, which would be about 30 dollars for a Uber round-trip, as well as the cost of your food. I didn't have to do this often, so I wasn't too much of a problem, just something to keep in mind!

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

People in Grantham were very nice! I met a bunch of different people and got a chance to talk with them just by being around the town!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

We had a tour of the hospital for our class, but one of my friends also had an issue with her food. The wait times ANYWHERE in the UK are outrageous. If you get sick, you'd better hope you brought the medicine to get yourself better, cause you will be wasting 1 or 2 precious days just waiting to get looked at. I got sick about halfway through the trip, but luckily I brought a bag FULL of medicine, so I was fine after a week. If you can ride it out, definitely try to get better on your own as much as you can before going anywhere else!

* Safety:

The host city was SUPER safe. I never once felt scared, even when we were walking around at night!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Haralxton is such a unique experience. I loved living in such a beautiful location with kind, helpful staff during the week, and having my home base to come back to from all of our weekend trips. They have anything you may need, and are more than willing to help you out in any sticky situation that you will get yourself into while abroad.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

We traveled a lot on the weekends, so our expenses were mainly on that, but if you were just staying at the manor all week, your only expenses would be if you went into town and bought something you needed or maybe some food.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Probably 30 dollars
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? SAVE YOUR MONEY!! You have no clue how much you will spend over there, and it is much better to have more than enough than to run out! Always carry a little bit of the local cash as well, it will come in handy in sticky situations!

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The people
  • The manor, which felt like home
  • The freedom
* What could be improved?
  • Food options
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? So many things, but to just be brave and have peace in knowing that with studying abroad comes a lot of ups and downs in such a short amount of time. Take every opportunity you can to explore and learn while you are over there, and know that if things don't go as planned, there is always a chance to grow from it, and there is always something or someone to get you out of it!

Comments: This class was AWESOME!! The professor was super nice, welcoming, and understanding! He wouldn't count against us if we got stuck on a flight or train the night before we returned to class on Monday before the weekend, and if we did, he always wanted to hear our story and what we learned from it! He led his class by discussion and was truly interested in what his students had to say. On our "experiential learning days", he made sure that everyone had a good time and that we were going places that were beneficial to our lives and were interesting to learn about. He never left anyone behind and made each day we spent with him one to remember!
