Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Harlaxton has a unique experience in its mandatory class "British Studies." Taught by British professors, you will learn more than most British citizens about the history and politics of the United Kingdom and about what it means to be British. The class format is a combination of Lecture and Seminar, catering to different learning styles. The professors are brilliant and the class is a lot of fun in spite of the hard work. If you are taking ~15 hours like I am, the courseload will be a little tough, but managable.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Very organized and well-done program!

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Harlaxton houses students in both the Manor itself and the next-door Carraige House. I am in the Manor and have a wonderfully spacious room with a gorgeous view. It is dorm-style housing with 2-4 students per room. Some of the rooms are quite small and the Carraige House accomidations are sometimes thought of as less desirable. However it too has its advantages with more of a community feeling and more privacy from the staff. Sheets/Duvets/Pillows are provided, but towels, dishes, etc need to be brought or purchased. The Carriage House is only a very short walk to the manor and is right next to the sports hall.

* Food:

The food here is very hit-and-miss, but mostly miss. Most students' main complaint is the food. It's really not that bad, but it's not often good either. Plan to take advantage of the free bread, lunchmeat, and peanut butter quite a bit. Vegetarian option served every meal and Vegan available if arranged in advance. A girl here is vegan and was not satisfied with the food quantities available to her at first, but they are doing better now. Another good thing is the ability to sign up for free packed lunches 24 hrs in advance, which are usually decent. Also, a local chinese restaraunt delivers and has excellent deals after 9 pm. Pizza & burger places also deliver. There are no cooking facilities available to students apart from refridgerators, microwaves, and electric kettles. The Refectory(dining hall) hours are also hard to get used to (they aren't open very long).

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Take advantage of every free program and trip offered- they are all amazing. There is also many oppertunities to travel with classes only being held Mon-Thurs and occasionally Mon-Wed morning. WONDERFUL!!!!

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Health Centre hours are very restricted which is quite inconvenient. However, the nurse is nice and can schedule a doctor's appointment for you. Safety is fairly decent, but make sure you stick together when you're out on the town.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Comments: This was an amazing class and Dr. Bujak is an awesome professor. You will be engaged in learning through field trips, our Harlaxton Manor, and personal stories from locals in a way I've never experienced before. The class is difficult, but it is worth it.
