A Decent Trip Past Review

By (University of Illinois - Urbana-Champaign) - abroad from 06/19/2017 to 07/18/2017 with

University of Galway: International Summer School

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I met a lot of friends (from America) and got to experience life in an amazing city. I will DEFINITELY return to Galway one day. Experiencing that city made it worthwhile because it is a beautiful place.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Sometimes it was difficult to get in contact with the administrators.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I lived in Corrib Village and it was less than satisfactory. The building I lived in had a fire alarm go off 5+ times throughout my stay but there was never a fire, smoke, or steam. The staff was slow and not very helpful. The rooms itself were also very dated.

* Food:

Cooked my own food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

It was difficult to become completely integrated because we were never introduced to any other Irish citizens that weren't staff members.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I became very sick towards the end of my program. I visited a local doctor who charged me 60 euro (did not take my insurance) to speak to me for two minutes and tell me that I would get better soon. I had a 102 degree for three days straight and all I could do was take Ibuprofen and other over-the-counter products. The doctor tested me for other things and told me that I would receive a call with my results after 2 days. After hearing nothing, I called the office and they told me they would call me when the results were ready. I NEVER received a call- therefore I never found out what illness I had nor did I receive a prescription for medicine that I really needed.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I fell in love with Galway but I wish the program had allowed me to meet more local people.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Difficult- had to purchase my own food and use cabs to travel to local places since our housing was far from the city.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $150
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Save as much money as possible prior to your trip because you will definitely spend more than you think. The weekend excursions and shopping trips really cause you to spend a lot of money on food and other things.
