I am counting down the days until I can go back Past Review

University of Hull: Hull - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It's hard to sum up all your experiences and interactions with everyone you met. I just made lot of friends from all over. It was definitely worthwhile and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Would I do the same program? I don't know, there's a lot I want to see. It was great, but I have nothing to compare it to so maybe if I went somewhere else it'd be ever better. It's hard to say. But I'd recommend study abroad to anyone and everyone.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

School in the UK is just a lot different. You're in class a lot less and you only have one test and probably one essay per class per year, but you had better do well on both of them. So sometimes it's hard to compare because I felt like I didn't do ANYTHING the whole semester and then I just studied like crazy for the final. They had good resources - a good library, probably tutoring and other support if you needed it, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

It seemed to work fine.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

It was nice that our house was so close to campus and I liked the street I lived on and the people I lived with, but our house had a lot of maintenance kind of issues.

* Food:

Idk, English food will be English food. I mostly just cooked for myself anyway. Sunday roasts are pretty ace though.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

The healthcare system there is awesome. It was easy to get appointments, it was close, and everything was free.

* Safety:

I think the UK is great overall for safety, but Hull is kind of a rough city. I never had any problems though and I always felt safe. It's like any city though, there's some areas you are better off just avoiding.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Ummm...I'm not going to lie, I am horrible at keeping track of finances so I'm not completely sure. I probably could have lived on a lot less but I went out a lot...I felt like it was part of the culture!!

* Was housing included in your program cost? No
* Was food included in your program cost? Yes
Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Too much on club entrance fees and drinks, and then more for travel and other expenses. It always seemed like something.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

Direct Enrollment/Exchange

* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? Exchange

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • I made a lot of local friends
  • I made a lot of international friends
  • I could take classes not offered at my university
* What could be improved?
  • My housing
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Ha, I wish I knew all the mistakes I was going to make while traveling - missing buses, nearly missing flights, booking the wrong hostels, etc. But I think it's also made me smarter, more aware, and resourceful. But let's just say I made a lot of mistakes and it wasn't always easy.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
