University of Hull: Hull - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned a lot about people and interactions, I finally saw all sides to every story when it comes to social groups. I learned about building relationships and how it feels to fail yet with failure comes a lesson, I am ready to take away all these new perspectives and apply them to my life. This trip was by no means easy, I was by no means perfect, yet these past 3 months were by all means helpful. Now I have a stronger sense of direction, even have a dream to come back to Hull and work at a women's center in the distant future!!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

This University has inspired independent study and thought, although unlike education I have revived in the past still valuable and relevant to my future studies.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I felt a little lost at sea upon first arrival many aspects of living, studies and local conditions were not fully community I feel. A bit more guidance as to how the system works at the University and the city life could be helpful, culture shock wasn't an issue as much as not knowing where to go for certain things like laundry or help with bus passes or student IDs.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Living situation was a minor frustration, the heating was sufficient, service could have been better.

* Food:

The lack of options instilled a form of learned helplessness most of the food was not agreeable, a change in menu cycle could be nice.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I felt submerged in the culture and reality of the community I was in, very accommodating to new comers and eager to share what they have to offer.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

They walk in clinics here are fast moving and quick to the point once being treated, I found it useful when needed. Although I had very little knowledge of resources available to me until half way through the semester.

* Safety:

I did not have any safety issues while here, I did heard of some stabbings fairly close to my location yet it never personally affected me. Still unnerving most definitely, glad to say I survived it all just fine!!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I loved it here, the city life experience on a smaller scale, if I could change certain things I would yet I would still want to do all of that here at University of Hull a home away from home!

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

It was semi difficult just due to life issues not entirely concerning conditions of University, did eat out more often than planned.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? £275
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Buy as little as possible for your room and kitchen, borrow dishes from friends. Just don't spend money on items you know you will have to leave behind!

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The world experience I have gained
  • The public transportation access
  • The beautiful landscape
* What could be improved?
  • Laundry system
  • Food options
  • Student email accessibility
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish there was a way the program could tell us who we will be living with in the blocks maybe a month or so before starting. It is a good way to instill community before moving in so when we arrive it is easier to socialize and then expand. I felt isolated at first not knowing any of the people in my block or how to get places on my own. Thankfully I met a person in the hallway the fist night who helped me out!!
