Under the Higher Education Framework Act 1968, the Reunion University Center was created in 1970. It is now composed of three units Teaching and Research: Law-economics, Letters and Sciences. The University Centre becomes a public, scientific and cultural, with a legal entity and financial autonomy.
In 1982, the university center is full University. In 1984, the Reunion Island has its own academy.
The University of La Réunion is a French institution of higher education and research in the heart of the Indian Ocean, in one of the most remote regions of Europe. From its original geo-strategic position, it is the only European university in this region.
