University of Leicester: Leicester - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
It was an eye opening experience for personal as well as cultural reasons. I already knew what I wanted to study and the direction I wanted to go, but it gave me a chance to explore parts of the world that I would not have gotten to otherwise, meet people from all over, and see how people outside of the US live.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The way the program worked is different than we are used to in our undergraduate experience. They emphasize an "individual study" type of approach, where basic materials are covered in class/lectures, but students are encouraged to further read/explore the topics on their own. This is generally because the students that are enrolled there (i.e. not on an exchange/study abroad permit) take a written exam at the end of the semester (or year I can't remember which) on that course's subject matter. However, for study abroad students who were there for a semester, the requirements were generally a paper or two due at the end of the semester (this was for the psychology courses, I do not know how it worked for other courses).

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

All my expectations were met. I had no major problems.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My housing papers actually arrived at my house after I arrived in England. Luckily, the office was open and able to assist me. The dorms were styled more like old houses with multiple rooms. Each room had two beds, and each floor had two bathrooms for people to share. Boys were downstairs, girls were upstairs in my particular dorm building. Area was safe, and near other students, a campus bar and dining hall was super close. We had to take a bus to campus and to the downtown area, but students could get a cheaper bus pass for the semester, and the bus waits/times were never bad. Everyone did buy bed linens/food when we arrived, but beds were provided for us. There were also kitchens upstairs and downstairs.

* Food:

Dining hall had some limited hours, but food was just like any other dining hall, or the option to eat out at a restaurant or make your own food was available.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

Had the option to go on a few different school sponsored/program sponsored trips (that you paid for). I enjoyed going to both the Scottish highlands for a weekend and Stonehenge/Salisbury for a day trip.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Like most places you just have to be smart. I never felt unsafe, but I never went anywhere alone at night, and most of the time other students were going to/from campus at the same time as you. I never had a need for the campus health center but a few people there with me went and didn't mention any major problems.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Do it. Especially if your school lets you do an exchange where tuition is the same abroad as it would be at home. There's no disadvantages, and it's an opportunity you won't get any other time!
