A semester at University of Malta Past Review
By Laura G (Hotel and Restaurant Administration, Oklahoma State University - Stillwater) for
University of Malta: Malta - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
I had an amazing time and have made friends with people all over the world. The time I spent in Malta was the best time of my life. I learned so much more outside of the classroom that I believe is much more important than anything I learned in school there.
Personal Information
How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? | 0-2 weeks |
Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
The school system is very different, only one type of teaching style is used. There is almost no work until the end when you have exams. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
Administration would not sign important documents, were only available a couple of hours a day, and did not understand the difference between American higher education and their style of education. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
Living with 200 other international students was wonderful. In a fairly safe, quiet town. Had to buy or rent kitchen utensils. Lived with 9 other people in my flat and shared a very small kitchen. The accommodations were not the nicest in the world, but the experience was incredible. |
* Food: |
not a lot of vegetarian/tofu type options, but plenty of vegetables and a nice supermarket that delivers to the surrounding area. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Spending Carnivale in Gozo, the sister island was a great way to get to know the culture of the Gozitans. It was also a great way to get to know the people I was living with. One of the best things organized by a school organization. Also the parties organized by AEGEE-Valletta were great. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
Never felt threatened or afraid at any time in Malta. Overall, a very safe place to live. One incident of a creepy man that was dealt with by the police. Police are hard to contact, the nearby police station is not always open. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
Yes
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |

A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | You have to be very patient with the school and government there. It is a mediterranean lifestyle and nothing moves quickly. Be prepared to wait for everything. |
