What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Spring 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

RMIT Village is in a great location, but has very small rooms. I had a horrible roommate at first, but she moved out and my new roommate was fabulous. It feels like a dorm, which is great to meet new people. The RMIT orientation was very fun, lots of parties and social events. However, there is a guest policy that was fairly strict that the students had a hard time agreeing with.

* Food:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? It is difficult because there is no "meal plan" and you have to buy all your food.

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? Definetely study abroad. I was nervous when I left for Australia, but looking back, I can't imagine not doing it! I felt like I really owned the city and became very familiar with my neighborhood. My volleyball team became my family and the engineers I studied with are still some of my good friends.

Individual Course Reviews

Course Name/Rating:

Heat and Mass Transport Processes 1

Course Department:
Instructor: Sandra Ketish
Instruction Language: English
Comments: It was an awesome course! Very "real-world"...we talked about the economics of engineering and practices in industry. I really enjoyed Sandra and her style of teaching. The class was hard, but I felt like I got a lot out of it!

Reactor Engineering

Course Department:
Instructor: Greg Qiao

Biochemistry

Course Department:
Instructor: Irene Stanley
Instruction Language: English
Comments: Very interesting, but definetely easier than the Bio 152 class offered at Tufts. There were a few professors who taught the course, and all of them were very articulate and well educated on their respective topics.

Weather and Climate Systems of Australia and New Zealand

Course Department: 627-225
Instructor: Kevin Walsh
Instruction Language: English
Comments: It was not what I was expecting...less cultural, more math. It was much more of a meteorological course than an Australian culture course. The professor was very dry and boring, but a very nice man.
