Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

I very much enjoyed my language class as well as my civilization and culture class. The teaching methods employed by the teachers in these classes were highly educational and interactive. I felt like I gained alot from these two classes. My history class was a little boring due to the lack of participation available during lecture. I felt that the grading procedure was very fair for all classes and the workload in each class was completely manageable.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The administration was very accessible as they were available for most of the day. The support services were open until 9PM. I never had a problem getting things taken care of through them. They were quick, concise, and very friendly about any inquiries I had. They seemed very knowledgeable about the country and I feel that my expectations were met when dealing with them.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

My housing arrangement was very comfortable and my roommates were very personable. They were always looking out for me and helping me to become accustomed to the culture. My apartment had all the amenities I required: kitchen, washer, my own room, bathroom, etc. The only downside to my apartment was its distance from the school...It was a 25 minute walk to campus everyday but I enjoyed the walk. Also, markets for buying food and other necesities were very close to my apartment.

* Food:

Food bought from the market was completely adequate and satisfactory. I very much enjoyed eating at tapas bars. The tapas were very enjoyable and were a great way to spend time with friends. Pretty much any tapas bar you go to will be enjoyable but among my favorites were: La bella y la bestia, los cuadros, la churreria cafeteria desi, las cuevas... Also, restuarants usually have great food for reasonable prices. Gelaterias were a great choice for ice cream.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The program leaves it up to the student to experience Spain on their own accord. It merely provides information on things to do when you arrive and while you are there. I was able to talk to the school once I got there and I became involved in several events they offered so it was no big problem.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

I felt very safe in the city, even late at night. I never felt any hostility towards me. I also never experienced any health problems or sickness while I was there. My program provided me with health insurance in case something bad did happen to me.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? Over the entire month I spent 800 euro including housing, food, and personal expenses. As for every week, for food and personal expenses, I probably spent ~150 euro...this included food bought from the market, weekend trips, social activities, any shopping I did, and tapas or restaurants I tried.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I believe anywhere from 800 to 1000 euro is sufficient to cover housing, food, and social events. Unanticipated expenses can come from the weekend trips as they are often last minute ordeals.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

The grammar I learned in my language class was mostly a review but I did learn a lot of colloquial components to the Spanish language in this class. For this reason, I enjoyed the class. The class also had a cultural project that forced students to try tapas and explore the cultural and monumental aspects of a specific barrio in Granada. This was a great learning experience and a great way to immerse myself by speaking Spanish to anyone we encountered.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? My words of wisdom are "Soak it all up!! Do everything you possibly can!! Go wherever you can!! Sleep when you get back to the states!! jaja"
