University of Newcastle: Newcastle - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes! I gained a different perspective on life in general and learned a lot about many different cultures.

Personal Information

The term and year this program took place: Spring 2009

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

They answered all my questions, made sure I was ready to go abroad, gave me great ideas for things to do while I was out here.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

Lived off campus, everyone was very friendly, had to take a bus to get anywhere though. Lived in Kotara, nice suburb, a bit cheaper than down by the beach, but you are away from everything.

* Food:

Lots of fresh fruit and fish

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

My program didn't organize anything, however, I recommend driving the great ocean road.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Newcastle has seen a tremendous increase in crime since I've been here, including numerous attacks on foreign students on the university campus. The university was a bit sluggish at first to do something about it, but have now stepped up security measures. Overall, nothing crazy, just be aware of your surroundings at all times.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Food is expensive.

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? It's a great place to study abroad, smaller size city, but close enough to Sydney so you don't get bored. Really nice people, great beaches, school is about average as far as academics are concerned, so maybe don't take core classes you really need, take classes that interest you, or that will enrich your overall learning experience. Newcastle has a large international population, so you are able to interact with many different people, it's great!
