University of Nicosia - Global Semesters: Nicosia - Semester in Cyprus

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
"I think this experience would have been a much better one overall had I better roommates. I wasn't expecting to live with Americans for the semester, as I thought we would be intermixed with Cypriot students. This made it very difficult to meet Cypriot students as the classes were incredibly small. Because of this, I feel as though I wasn't truly immersed in the culture surrounding me, in fact most of my social exchanges with Cypriots took place in the market environment. The apartments are set up in a very closed off way, and that made it difficult to talk with other members of the program, lest there be an excursion. This led me to feel stuck with my apartment mates, who, needless to say wasn't very nice to me, and due to this being the environment I had to spend most of my time in, it really put a damper on things. Other than the way the social aspect of the program is set up ( which I do think is extremely important when it comes to studying out of the country, and expecting to meet others in the culture, or to create a peaceful environment to come home to) Cyprus was very nice, and the academics were okay and Laura and Sakis were absolutely excellent helpers, and very kind. I do wish that there might have been more excursions (perhaps to areas in the north, or extended trips- with different roommates each time) in order to switch things up a bit, so that if someone is living in unsavory conditions, it would give them a chance to get to know other members of the program."
