University of Nicosia - Global Semesters: Nicosia - Semester in Cyprus

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained a lot from my experience. I have never been much of an extrovert back at my home university but since from being here I have grown a lot and have come out of my "shell" which has really helped me have a great experience abroad.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The classes at the University of Nicosia were much less difficult than my classes at my University back in America, however I did learn a lot while I have been here and it was nice to have a more relaxing semester while doing my time abroad.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I did not have any personal experience with the healthcare here but other people did and everything went well for them.

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I had the time of my life while abroad in Cyprus. I became friends with people in the program that I will now have life long friendships with and I also became friends with many of the people in the European program, Erasmus, and they made my time here unforgettable. I have been able to travel all around Europe, visiting a total of nine countries as well as getting the experience of going to one of the best beaches in Europe almost every weekend. I have two more weeks left of my program and I have not once gotten home sick, but when I leave here and can consider Cyprus to be my second home, I will most definitely have home sickness for here.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? I would get out about 200 euros every 2-3 weeks and that would be used for expenses as well as grocery's
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? The first few weeks will be very exciting and you think you should go do everything and not have to worry as much about spending because you just got there but this is part of the year where me and my friends spent the most because we were being careless and were just very excited to be abroad.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How much did the program encourage you to use the language?

0 = No encouragement, 5 = frequent encouragement to use the language

Our program offered a class in Greek but I did not take the course, however people I know learned a lot from the course.

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
How would you rate your language skills at the end of the program? Beginner
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? I did not take any Greek prior to departure, I took French at the 101 and 102 level.
How many hours per day did you use the language? 0
Do you have any tips/advice on the best ways to practice the language for future study abroad participants? Before you leave it would be a good idea to know key words in the language and then gradually learn more as you spend more time in the country.
