The Wonderfully Laid Back, Yet Amazing, Country of Cyprus! Past Review

University of Nicosia - Global Semesters: Nicosia - Semester in Cyprus

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I gained newfound knowledge on the outsiders perspective of America and some great insight into the culture of Cyprus. I can now comfortably handle public transportation in any country that I go to (within reason) and have gotten a lot better with travel plans and such. Incredibly worthwhile, especially when considering how much I want to travel later on in life.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I have no regrets. Of course one can always argue for things to be better or that they could have been worse, but I had a great time overall and would not change a thing.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $200+
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? I would recommend eating two big meals a day and limiting how often you eat out. Cooking for yourself can be a challenge at first (if you are not used to it) but a trip to AlphaMega and a few simple recipes will go a long way towards saving money. Another potential option is having big dinners where several people pitch into the overall cost of the dinner. My friends and I did this various times and ate good meals for fairly cheap.

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? How expensive it is to return to the country of Cyprus when going to mainland for travels. Also, it would have been nice to know that Cyprus does not have a train/metro system at public disposal. I would also have liked to know how to effectively spend my time, or at least in a wiser fashion. Being centralized in the country makes it a minor ordeal when trying to go beaches or getting to know the island.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
