A worthwhile trip for the weekend experience Past Review

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I learned that I am extremely grateful for things that are really small. I think the weekend trips and the experience was extremely worthwhile but I feel as though I wasted a lot of time in classes that I didn't need to be taking.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The classes were okay. The selection of courses was not that fast and I found it very hard to choose two after I found out my program was no longer being offered.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

The shower in our apartment had pretty bad water pressure which made showering extremely hard. The bed that I was assigned to sleep on felt like there was no mattress and just a box spring.

* Food:

I ended up buying out most of the time. I feel as though there was a lot of confusion on whether or not the meal plan was required or not.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

It was hard to integrate since our classes were with other students on the trip and not local students.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

From what I have heard from other people (I had no need to have any health issues addressed while I was abroad) the health care system in Cyprus was not great. My friend was admitted to the hospital, hooked up to an IV and basically left there by herself.

* Safety:

I felt extremely safe in the country.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

I did not want to go on this program to begin with and then the program that I intended to go on had been cancelled so I was basically forced to choose another program (none of them being what I wanted to take) and find a class that I later on found out I don't even need.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? 20 euros approximately
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Find a friend to split dinners with. So I basically only paid for food 50% of the time because I would only cook dinner for my friend and I 50% of the time and the other half she would cook.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? No

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • Weekend trips
  • Freedom
* What could be improved?
  • Communication between students and advisors (specifically Matt)
  • Better preparation before departure
  • Bigger class selection and a guarantee that the program I apply for will be offered
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? That I was going to need a camera for photography, and I wouldn't be getting credit for either class that I took at my home institution.

Comments: The professor made an assumption that the students in the class had taken both kinesiology and anatomy, I have not taken either so I felt as though I had to work extra hard to keep up in the class. The exams were okay, however, I felt as though I lost a lot of point due to the wording of some of the questions, since it was obvious the professors first language was greek he had a hard time putting sentences together that made any sense to me.
