University of Northern Iowa: Capstone in Greece

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes! It was fantastic and opened my eyes to the world.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

We traveled a lot by bus, which was necessary to get the most out of Greece as a whole. However, I feel that on days with longer bus rides the lectures should be much shorter. We had much to read and had to take notes at every site as well. The experience would have been more enjoyable had there been less emphasis on notes and readings that impacted the tests.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Overall the program was fine. We were able to experience much of what Greece had to offer.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I had to buy a few things that I forgot, contact lens cleaner and deodorant, which was my fault. Night was accessible in a few of the cities that we visited, although it was often too expensive to enjoy. My biggest qualm was that there were no gyms or access to fitness equipment of any kind. The hotels didn't have fitness equipment, most didn't have a pool. In the last city I found a crappy little gym and paid 10 euros to workout for one day.

* Food:

There is little to no access to protein in Greece. Their diet is mostly carbs, so any fitness enthusiasts need to be prepared by either buying a bunch of protein bars or bringing powder for shakes. The food itself was fine, we ate mostly gyros as they were cheap and quick.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The riots in Athens were fantastic. While we were not in Athens when the protests turned violent, we were able to see the peaceful protests as they just stood there shouting at buildings. Bargaining with merchants was fun as well, as you could negotiate prices on some things. Aside from that I was able to have a fine dinner (provided by the professor and his wife) overlooking the Mediterranean Sea at sunset which was unforgettable.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Safety is fine provided that you have common sense. If your leaders AND the locals tell you not to go somewhere, don't go there. Drug use can be blatant and out in the open, however it was never an issue that actually affected us. We were lucky enough to have no health issues on the trip, Thank You Jesus!

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
Language acquisition improvement?

The "component" was very limited. We were taught everyday phrases that allowed us to thank people and generally be more polite. Most people had pretty good English, although whenever we uttered a phrase in Greek most of the Greeks were surprised and seemed to enjoy the interaction a bit more.
