University of Otago, New Zealand: Study Abroad Programme

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
gained experience hiking, camping, planning trips, finding my way around a new place, figuring things out without help from my parents.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Big classes, sometimes rotating professors, light workload, not that much class time

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

my kiwi host was great - helped us find our way around campus, advised us on classes, etc. host program was usually responsive to requests/concerns about our flat. they hosted some social gatherings for international students.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

stayed in a 6 person flat. got pretty cold in winter because of bad insulation.

* Food:

cooked for myself. food can be a bit expensive.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

pretty similar culture to the U.S.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

required insurance is around $200. student healthcare covered by insurance. much better than the U.S.

* Safety:

pretty safe city.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

depends on how much you travel.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $300-$400 (including buying a car, gas money, camping equipment)
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? extra weight for airplane luggage is expensive and so is shipping so don't bring too much

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
