University of Otago, New Zealand: Study Abroad Programme

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I think my self- confidence in general improved. I don't know how or why, but it did. I gained lifetime friends, tons of memories and experiences. I discovered a newfound passion for travelling and hiking, and discovered that I'm more adaptable than I thought I was.

I love New Zealand, and specifically Dunedin so much. It was such a fun town. Everyone was so nice and laid back. It was surrounded by the most beautiful beaches and hills. I quickly made a group of friends that became my second family. I have nothing but good things to say about it. I could 100% see myself living there for longer and it was one of the saddest things I've ever done leaving.

* What did you like most about the program?
  • the people
  • the beauty of the country
  • the smaller feel of the school
* What could be improved?
  • i think they could have told us how important is was filling out the housing application. I didn't really have anything in common with my flatmates.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? I wish I would have brought more hiking gear (headlamps, tent, sleeping bad, etc.) instead of clothes. All that stuff was more necessary than I thought and way more expensive than clothes. I ended up buying so much from op shops, I could have literally brought nothing with me.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Nearly Native or Trail Blazer
Craving the most authentic experience possible, perhaps you lived with a host family or really got in good with the locals. You may have felt confined by your program requirements and group excursions. Instead, you'd have preferred to plan your own trips, even skipping class to conduct your own 'field work.'
