Absolutely loved Oxford - looking to go back for a master's degree Past Review

University of Oxford - Visiting Students

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely worthwhile. Academically, I learned how to digest 40+academic papers per week and write about two 2000-word papers per week as well. It seems hard at first, but by the end I had the process down to about a few hours each week. I also learned how to be more independent and how to adapt to new surroundings and to make the most of every moment.

I absolutely loved every aspect of this experience. It was challenging academically not only because the material was very intellectually stimulating, but also because their academic system is so different from the American system. I also got to know so many local students through living with them and through joining sports teams. I loved the town of Oxford itself and had so much fun learning about British culture. There are always events going on at all times of the day and at all times of the week, so there is no shortage of interesting and fun things to do outside of working. There are amazing study spots and so many historic locations. I got to see an episode of The Crown being filmed outside of the library I was working in! Good coffee shops and amazing pubs. Also, university access for students is amazing and gets you into so many places that you wouldn't otherwise have access to.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Cook with friends - it's cheaper and more fun!

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • the academic rigor
  • befriending British students
  • all the travel I was able to do while balancing a good amount of time in Oxford getting to know the university
* What could be improved?
  • communication about lodging details before the program starts (i.e. as soon as you get in rather than in August)
  • organization in general, but that is something every single Oxford student has to get used to anyways
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? How short it would all feel! Also, that many students are MPhil and DPhil students who I would also befriend and that they are generally living in Oxford year-round, so I could have reached out to club leaders and sports captains before I even got there in order to start interacting with them as soon as I arrived
