I learned many practical things in Spain Past Review

University of Salamanca: Salamanca - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Absolutely it was worthwhile. I gained so much more knowledge than just Spanish, although that improved significantly. I learned many practical things such as navigating a metro system, organizing travel, and living in an unfamiliar situation. All of these life lessons have improved my person and have helped increase my confidence. I also learned much more spanish on a day to day basis than i would have in a classroom in the states. Living submersed in a culture forces you to learn key words and phrases just to fulfill certain essential tasks.

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

I feel the program in madrid was very well-organized and structured, but the Salamanca program was somewhat lagging behind in structure and organization.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

In Madrid, I lived with a roommate in a small room in a small apartment with our madre, her daughter, and another lady. The accomodations were quite sufficient although our madre and her daughter smoked incessantly. In Salamanca, my roommate and I lived in a small room of a small apartment with our madre, padre and another student. These accomodations were also quite sufficient although the couple was much more concerned about out power and water usage. All in all, accomodations were great.

The only thing i would elect to change if possible would be the distance. In Madrid we had at least a 40 minute commute by metro and in Salamanca it was at least a 25 minute walk.

* Food:

I am not a picky eater whatsoever. I enjoyed the food we were served by our host families.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

We visited a wide range of sights in and around Madrid: art museums smaller cities around with varoius historical significance and attractions. I did not enjoy the way things ran in Salamanca. We were required to do student led excursions throughout the city which i do not think were as meaningful or informative.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? We went out to eat on the weekends usually and got various snacks throughout the week so maybe 40 euros on food. we also did some shopping but that varied from week to week.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Everything is more expensive!

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
Language acquisition improvement?

I believe my language skills, though far from fluent, have improved drastically.

Comments: I did not enjoy this class. It was not helpful and i don't feel like i learned much at all. I was in class with students who were at a more advanced level than i was, and although i performed well on the tests, i did not enjoy classtime activities and discussions.
