University of Seoul: Seoul - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
Although the main reason for me doing the program was for educational reasons, I was able to get much more out of it than that purpose. I was able to learn to live on my own, and learned how to budget my money throughout my entire trip. The most important thing that I gained through this exchange would have to be learning and accepting not only the Korean culture but also other cultures. Going in this program I was afraid that I would hate the place or would want to come back home right away. After the program ended and it was time for me to leave, I felt the exact opposite, I realized that I had learned to love the place and the people and would love to be able to go back someday. I also gained alot of friends from different parts of the world through this program.

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience
Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc. |
Depending on the classes that you choose, the teachers are sometimes hard to understand. At the same time, they try to be understanding knowing that you only have less than a month to learn the materials and with you being busy with activities. |
* Host Country Program Administration
On-site administration of your program |
The main Advisor for this program is really good. She replies back to emails quite fast and is very helpful for every question that you have. During the program she also participates in the activities and interacts with the students very often. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I felt very safe in the dorms at University of Seoul. There is a security guard at the entrance of the dorm 24/7. The living facilities is also seperated for men and women. The dorms were really clean, and bathrooms were cleaned on the weekdays. There are also lounges, a computer lab, conference rooms, study rooms and a convenient store all in the dorm building. |
* Food: |
There are alot of food stores just outside the school gates. The food in school were all very cheap. Just be reminded that most korean food are spicy. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
Through this program you'll be able to meet people from all over the world. This is also a good way to learn other cutlures aside from Korean. I went on a 4 day trip to two southern cities in South Korea. This was really fun and an enjoyable way to learn about part of Korea's history. We visited alot of temples and museums, but at the same time we also did physical activities such as Sunmudo at the monks temple, river rafting(really fun!), spending some time at Aqua World(small waterpark). The best part was that all of these are already paid for(what you paid for the trip). The accomodations were also one of the best aspects. For the first two nights we stayed at a very fancy hotel, and on our last night we stayed at a traditional Korean house and even had a barbecue. Every meal was also provided. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
I felt safe throughout my program. Although there was the spread of the Swine Flu, the program administrator's took care of the problem pretty well. For the first few days, they had a nurse come around the dorms in the morning checking everyone's temperature making sure no one was above the normal temperature. Safety within the school grounds was pretty good. If you are heading out, you're responsible for your own safety. But Seoul is a pretty safe city as long as you know the right places to go. |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Language
Language acquisition improvement? |
Although I was learning korean in class, my interaction outside of class really helped me more. I was able to speak korean everyday and everywhere I went people were nice enough to try to understand my Korean. Shopping and venturing out on your own or with others who dont speak much Korean is also helpful in improving your korean skills. |
Direct Enrollment/Exchange
* Did you study abroad through an exchange program or did you directly enroll in the foreign university? | Exchange |
A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | Make sure to prepare your self physically and emotionally. Also know your limits while you are away. The most important thing is to enjoy yourself while you're there. Don't be afraid to try new things and explore every aspect of the culture. |
Individual Course Reviews
Course Name/Rating: |
Intermediate Korean Language |
Course Department: | KOR |
Instructor: | Professor Jung, Miji & Professor Kim, Eunju |
Instruction Language: | Korean |
Comments: | This was a really fun course. Although the teachers barely spoke in english, it really helped me understand the grammars and sentence structures better. The teachers also were very enthusiastic every class and incorporated what the students were interested in to their lectures. |
Credit Transfer Issues: | I took this course to fulfill my Korean 202 class. I suggest that if you are planning to take this for KOR 202, to speak with the language advisor first because he does have some restrictions to taking this course. |
Course Name/Rating: |
Issues in International Finance & Accounting |
Course Department: | |
Instructor: | Chang Young Chung & Kyong Shik Eom |
Instruction Language: | English |
Comments: | This course was rather hard for me. If you have a good background on accounting and especially finance, this course would be pretty good. But if you're just getting into finance and/or accounting, the topic in this course will be very difficult. The instructors were nice enough to make their exams rather 'easy' but at the same time, the terms were still too hard for me to understand within that short time span. |
Credit Transfer Issues: | I believe this course can't be transfered over as a replacement for any other courses, but you might be able to just keep the credit as an elective credit. |
