Brighton: A lot of fun, very little work Past Review

University of Sussex: Brighton - Direct Enrollment & Exchange
Yes. I met new friends from around the globe and acquired a much more global outlook. I do with that I had been more submerged in a new culture and that I had felt my classes to be worth my time.
Personal Information

Review Your Program
* Overall educational experience

On-site administration of your program |
I did not personally have a need for much interaction with the program faculty once I arrived. However many of my friends had negative experiences. |
* Housing:
How satisfied were you with your living arrangements? |
I lived in the Norwich House dorm, with mostly international students. It was great because we came to be very good friends during the Sussex in September program, however, I don't feel that I got the full immersion experience. I would have liked to live with more British students. We were required to purchase bed linens and cookware upon arrival - though the university does offer a few cheap packages that cover these items (but not the best quality). The dorm wasn't very bad - it was nice having my own room - but some bathrooms and kitchens (all were shared) were definitely cleaner than others. The heat and hot water went out 2 times during my stay. My sink backed up twice, I was lucky in other rooms the gross water overflowed onto their carpets. While I know the dollar and the pound are very different - for what I payed I would have MUCH better accommodations for something of similar price at home. |
* Food: |
I really like all of the restaurants on campus. They weren't overpriced and generally served very good food. |
* Social & Cultural Integration:
How integrated did you feel with the local culture? |
There were many planned excursions on the Sussex in September program. We went to London, Bath, Stonehenge, The Seven Sisters, Lewes. We also had food and sights tours of Brighton and night activities. |
* Health Care:
How well were health issues addressed during the program? |
|
* Safety: |
The University is on it's own isolated campus - so very safe. I always felt safe in Brighton, it is small and not very threatening. Though at night there are many drunken people happy to start a fight and apparently there can be a nasty drug scene - which I never witnessed, |
If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? |
No
|
Finances
* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?
(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost) |
|
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? | I think the Sussex in September program (which was required by my university) should have been covered under my University exchange, as I pay for a semester that cover August to December - while classes here only last from October to December. It seems sensible that the September program should be included, but it is $1500 extra. I do not think the program should be removed - I highly recommend it. |

A Look Back
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? | If you're really nervous about studying abroad I think this would be a great program for you. It doesn't really push your comfort levels. If you're looking for an extremely unusual, life changing and challenging experience - go elsewhere. |

Comments: | Very interesting course. Focused on the stories relating to patrons and the production of artwork more than style. Instructors switched each week and some were stronger than others, but overall good. |
