About
This is a remarkable opportunity to take Bio 311D surrounded by the natural beauty of France, an ideal setting to explore evolution, development, physiology, and ecology. With Nice, France as home base, days begin with class lectures followed by some free time in the afternoon. Activities include hiking and observing pollinator ecology at nearby castle ruins, snorkeling to see aquatic ecosystems, and a day trip to Monaco and the Oceanographic Museum. Hands-on learning about sea urchin fertilization and ascidian development takes place at the Institut de la Mer de Villefranche (IMEV), a research station 20 mins away by bus or train, or a seaside hike. In Arles, a UNESCO World Heritage site, the group learns about Roman antiquities and explores the city of Van Gogh. A day trip takes the group to the Camargue, where the Rhone river meets the Mediterranean Sea. Students tour native ecosystems and chat with land managers, observe flamingos and wild horses, and play on the beaches of Saintes Marie de la Mer.
