About
The objective of this course is to introduce the properties of engineering materials on the basis of an understanding of fundamental concepts such as crystal structures, defects, diffusion and phase equilibria. The course begins by covering the fundamentals of atomic structure and bonding, crystal structures, imperfections (defects), diffusion, phase diagrams and solidification. These ideas are then applied to the mechanical properties of the major classes of materials: metals and alloys, ceramics, polymers, and composites. The course concludes with a brief overview of the electrical, magnetic, and optical properties of materials. Students will also gain insights into real world examples of materials in research and industry, insights into commercialization, entrepreneurship and manufacturing through talks and visits to UK's leading startups.
