About

This program considers the several significant factors that caused people to leave their families, friends, and familiar environs to set out for-or to be forced to go to-America. About one in eight Americans identify as having Irish ancestry, where the city of Cork, including nearby Cobh Harbor (formerly Queenstown), was the main point of exodus for Irish immigrants throughout the 18th through 20th centuries. This May Term program will focus the on the reasons for emigration to America-the Great Famine of the late 1840s, especially-and on the Irish experience in global context. With a mix of classroom based learning and excursions throughout Ireland, students will learn about Irish emigration to America, and how their influence has shaped America and Ireland.
