Bristol! An Experience You Will Never Forget! Past Review

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
I would have done a different program, no questions asked. I would have stayed for a semester in a more centralized European country, in which I could explore far more lands. The program I took did provide me with plenty of memorable experiences and sights I would have otherwise never seen, and I am grateful for that. Once you are over in Europe, you will want to stay and travel everywhere!

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 2 weeks - 1 month

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

The teaching methods at UWE were brilliant. The lectures put together had academic merit, yet were provided in an interactive and encouraging environment. It was a breath of fresh air in comparison to unappealing power point lectures and dispassionate instructors. The grading system designed for our program was certainly effective in obtaining as much information about our experiences as possible, but there were some aspects in which the grade could be determined by the teacher's views and feelings. I feel that a grading criteria that involves such requirements is elementary and unfair, and personally offensive to someone like myself who is paying large sums of money to take these courses. I will recommend this course to fellow students in the future, but only because the program will be under new academic advisement. The current advisement that the program is under is unwelcoming to students, and damaging to our experiences abroad and at our host institutions.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Our program advisor at UWE was nothing short of brilliant. He is truly the rock of the program, and without him this program would be nothing close to what it is. I am grateful to have met him, and when I do recommend this program to future students, it will be because of his teaching ideals and genuine care for the exchange students.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I was not thrilled with my host family and their living accommodations. They were at times down right rude to me, and did not show a true joy to have us in their home. It seemed to me that they viewed me as an opportunity to make money, while doing something that makes them feel good about themselves. Though that may sound harsh, my host family made far less of an effort to get to know me than the host families of other students in my program.

* Food:

The future was moderately good, though the eating accommodations were somewhat dissappointing. My roommate and I ate our meals at a tiny kitchen table by ourselves, as our host family never joined us for a meal. I feel this prevented us from experiences that other students got to enjoy.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

The weekend trips to London and Dublin were amazing, as well as the week spent in Belgium. The side trips were a nice step-away from the classroom, and for the most part were a good mix of education and pleasure.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

Bristol was like any other city. It is for the most part safe, with a few rough areas. It really posed little problem to us, as you just have to plan your travels away from those areas.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? No

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $200-$300 a week. What will really deplete your bank account is the pubs and bars. Unless you act responsibly and budget appropriately, you will see the large portion of your finances dwindle quickly.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Be wise, plan ahead, and bring more money if you can!

Language

How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

A Look Back

* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? My advice to a student abroad is to not take advice from anyone! You need to go to Europe and experience the sights and sounds on your own bearings. Do not spend your time abroad based on the opinions and comforts of past students, and rather see for yourself of what foreign lands truly have to offer. The reward will be far greater by doing so!
