University of Westminster: London - Summer School

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Don't set your expectations too high. I feel like I had very high expectations of how amazing London would be so then had difficulty settling in to the culture as it is different than Australia. I think it was definitely worthwhile though as I have grown a lot as a person I think.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 1 month - 6 months

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

My tutor was a lovely academic who has also taught at Oxford and Cambridge which was evident in her wealth of knowledge and level of academia. I was very impressed and it made for a very interesting course.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

The university offered a lot of help to us as students and were willing to lend a hand in any problems we might have had. They were very clear in their explanations of the program as well and handled all the timing of activities, and the activities themselves perfectly.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

I stayed at Marylebone Hall which was a perfect location for seeing everything London. It was nice to have my own room and bathroom and although there were 4 other people sharing the kitchen I never encountered any problems with them and we all worked harmoniously with one another. Would have liked another pillow because the one given is quite flat but not unbearable.

* Food:

I bought all my own food so if there's anyone to blame for not liking it, that would be me. Food is expensive here in London but I found that cooking my own meals really did save a lot of money.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

I feel like I have really come to know and understand English culture...which is pretty much understanding pub culture. The English love a drink (a generalisation I know but the evidence is there!) and there is a wonderful day and night life open to everyone which was introduced to us in both the social program activities and course work that included excursions to different parts of London.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

I didn't have any issues with healthcare. I was sick whilst here but found that there are numerous pharmacies around the place with the necessary medicine.

* Safety:

I felt very safe at Marylebone Hall and fine when walking around London at night when with other people.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

I really enjoyed my course on an academic level. The tutor was brilliant, the class were willing to learn and the friends I made were really nice.

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

I guess a lot of this is personal preference on how much you're willing to spend and want to go out but I definitely went over my food budget for the week, more than once. I think this is mainly because I wanted to go out and experience London culture rather than stay in and cook my own meals, which is a lot cheaper.

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? $800 AUD
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Cook your own meals. Don't do activities that you don't want to do. The bus is cheaper than the tube. If you can walk then you should walk.

A Look Back

* What did you like most about the program?
  • The course - London Theatre Studies
  • Meeting people of other cultures
  • Being in London/England. Having that as the basis for the course/social program.
* What could be improved?
  • Try not advertise to so many Americans. I feel like I learnt more about America than England.
  • There should be more activities where everyone is invited, not just the social program
  • There should be more get to know you activities. People stuck to the friends they made in the first day and didn't bother talking to anyone else which sucked.
* What do you know now that you wish you knew before going on this program? That it's going to be hard but it's going to be worth it.

Reasons For Studying Abroad

To help future students find programs attended by like-minded individuals, please choose the profile that most closely represents you.
The Avid Adventurer
The wardrobe you packed was better suited for a semester of camping than club hopping. Outdoorsy, you might forgo a crazy night out for an early all-day adventure. You'd rather take in the rich culture of an old town than the metropolis of a modern city, but for you getting off the grid is ideal.
