Uppsala University: Uppsala - Direct Enrollment & Exchange

What did you gain/learn from your experience abroad? Was it worthwhile?
Yes certainly. It was the first time I ever lived abroad. Going to a European university also forces you to be a lot more independent than an American university, where you are kind of babied, so that's a good learning experience.

Personal Information

How much international exposure did you have prior to this program? 0-2 weeks

Review Your Program

* Overall educational experience

Academic rigor, intensity, resources, etc.

Classes of course varied, but things tended to be based only on one final assignment rather than any sort of coursework during the semester, which was assigned but not graded.

* Host Country Program Administration

On-site administration of your program

Very good program. Only gripe for me is that it was a bit of a hassle to get medical care.

* Housing:

How satisfied were you with your living arrangements?

* Food:

I cooked all my own food.

* Social & Cultural Integration:

How integrated did you feel with the local culture?

There are a lot of events and things to go to. If you wanted to you you could go out probably every day of the week.

* Health Care:

How well were health issues addressed during the program?

* Safety:

City is totally safe. It was a pain to get reimbursed for hospital/clinic visits though.

If you could do it all over again would you choose the same program? Yes

Finances

* Money: How easily were you able to live on a student's budget?

(1 = not very easy/$200+ on food & personal expenses/week, 2.5 = $100/week, 5 = very easily/minimal cost)

Not including program expenses, about how much money did you spend on food and other expenses each week? If you divide everything out I spent at least like 300 dollars a week. But this includes rent, and also I eat more than most people do.
Do you have any general money-saving tips for future study abroad participants? Don't eat out too often, bike everywhere.

Language

* Did your program have a foreign language component? Yes
How would you rate your language skills at the beginning of the program? None
What was the highest level language course you had completed prior to departure? None
If applicable, to what degree did your living situation aid your language acquisition?

Language acquisition improvement?

Everyone spoke English. If you are interested in learning Swedish you need to really make an effort to do so.
